Shri Ramaraju - MD BHILAI STEEL PLANT

Born on 4th March 1950 in the temple town of , Shri Ramaraju is a Graduate in Electrical Engineering from Madras University. Shri Ramaraju joined Bhilai Steel Plant in the year 1972 as Graduate Engineer and has since worked in many departments of Bhilai like Coke Ovens & Coal Chemicals Department, Steel Melting Shop and as Head of the Electrical Organisation before heading the Projects Organisation as GM I/c Projects in Jan. '04 and later Executive Director (Projects) in August 2004. Shri Ramaraju took charge as Managing Director of Bhilai Steel Plant on September 28, 2006.


While in Coke Ovens, Shri Ramaraju successfully undertook commissioning of 7 meter tall Batteries, introduced Ceramic Welding Technology in the Battery Repairs and indigenously developed Coking Process Management System in the Batteries. In SMS II, he successfully commissioned and stabilized Converter, Concast route of Steel making in Bhilai Steel Plant. As head of the Electrical Organisation, he took many initiatives towards conservation of energy, developing various spares through in-house facilities and phasing out of consumption of environment hazardous chemicals like Carbon Tetra Coal(CTC), which was extensively used in electrical repair jobs.

As MD of SAIL’s flagship unit, Shri Ramaraju has successfully led Bhilai Steel Plant to set best ever production records in almost all areas of performance in financial year 2007-08 and 2008-09. He is also leading the Plant’s massive modernisation and expansion programme that will see Bhilai’s Hot Metal production climb up to 7.5 MT. In recognition of his leadership skills and willingness to take up new challenges, he has been given additional responsibility of Director and Chairman of the Board of Maharashtra Electrosmelt Limited.

Under Shri Ramaraju’s leadership as MD, Bhilai has registered all-round improvement in performance including product development and discharge of its corporate social responsibilities. He has taken keen interest in deployment of Knowledge Management (KM) in the organisation and has also guided efforts towards introducing several new and bold initiatives like Enterprise Resources Planning (ERP), Manufacturing Execution System (MES) and Six Sigma Concept.

Under Shri Ramaraju’s leadership, concerted efforts are being made to further improve the quality of life in our township as well as in our workplaces. No effort is being spared to train the workforce. Bhilai’s Corporate Social Responsibility activities have taken a new direction with the setting up of Bhilai Ispat Kalyan Chikitsalaya and the Bhilai Ispat Vikas Vidyalaya for the benefit of people who are economically challenged. Bhilai’s triple bottomline approach of directing efforts in social, economic and environmental areas have once again been recognized with the CII – ITC Sustainability Award that it has won for years 2006, 2007 and 2008. Bhilai has also received the Golden Peacock Award for Corporate Social Responsibility for the year 2007 and 2008. While Shri Ramaraju has been personally honoured with the Prakriti Ratna award for excellent work done in area of environmental protection by Exnora International, the list of awards that Bhilai has won in recent years is long. This includes the Rajiv Gandhi National Quality Award, Greentech Safety Gold Award, Greentech Environment Excellence Gold Award for 2007, Golden Peacock National Quality Award for 2006.

A widely traveled person, Shri Ramaraju has visited countries like USSR, UK, Japan, Netherlands, Austria, Germany and Italy. A sportsman, he was an avid Basket Ball player in his student days, representing his college as well as University in Basket Ball Tournaments. His love of the game continued even after joining Bhilai Steel Plant. He captained the BSP Basketball team from 1977-1982. He represented the erstwhile state of Madhya Pradesh in Senior National basketball Tournaments from 1977-1981
